Research Question: Are foods from genetically engineered plants safe
IC.GALEGROUP.COM. Genetically Modified Food- Opposing Viewpoints Online Collection. 2015. Web. 18 October 2015.
This article focuses on the advantages of genetically modified foods. The concept of genetically modified food is explained on the basis of food security concerns and the scarcity of food that is observed owing to the continuously increasing population and very limited land available for production of food crops. They have stated that the genetic engineering production of food would help in considerable amount of food crop production throughout the year irrespective of the season that is going on. Genetic engineered plants serve to fulfill many shortages in nutrition and quality which could not be obtained in the natural plants in a specific region. They have stressed on the positive effects of genetically modified crops and have failed to consider the fact that there is hardly any kind of labelling on the food products that they are genetically modified and this has to be changed for the better awareness and knowledge of the consumers.

Smith, Jeffrey. GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOODS MAY POSE NATIONAL HEALTH RISK. 1 August 2004. Web. 18 October 2015.
This article highlights the negative effects of consuming genetically modified food on the quality of environment, eco-system and the health of human beings. It states that when one gene is added while producing genetically modified crops, its effect and reaction on the other gene might be unfavorable and not desirable. It may lead to development of changes that were not intended while carrying out the process and such inadequate knowledge of such changes would be harmful for the overall health of the people and disturb the ecological cycle of food chain. There may be chances of chemical contamination in the modified food plants where harmful herbicides may be present in it. There is a damage caused to the environment by the chemicals that are used in these plants which enters the atmosphere and other resources and pollutes them.
Thesis: Genetically modified food plants are unsafe for consumption and harmful to the environment.
There are many disadvantages that are observed in the consumption of genetically modified food as well as in the adoption of such technology. The safety issues regarding consuming them are observed as there are no researches that provide the relation in the safe consumption of these foods on long term basis. There are many allergies that are unknown which can be acquired by consumption of these foods and these allergies may damage different parts of the human body. There are researches that prove that there are minute changes of acquiring cancerous cells that would lead to damaging the immunity systems.
The new genes that is introduced in the crops protect them from herbicides and pesticides, but hey develop chemical substances that are harmful for the environment by polluting the soil. The traces of these chemicals that are not been detected by the quality control and supervision bodies of the UN Food Council and FDA are found to damage humans in their immune system, nervous system and cause other infections. Such chemicals also enter the food chain through animals and plants and disturb the balance of the food chain. Hence, there must be an in depth study in identifying the hazards and on the basis of that there must be specifications determining the quality of genetically modified food plants and products.
It is good that science has been developed to such a level that it can be used to develop genetically modified foods, but the health of the people and the well-being of the eco-system should not be neglected and it should be taken extensive care of while developing them.
