INTRODUCTION

Henna (or Mehndi in some cultures) is a plant with multiple uses and has been utilized for centuries. The origin is said to be 9000 years before when people used henna paste to cover their body for a cooling effect and the stain it left was recognized as a decorative art. Nowadays, Henna is used extensively not only for rituals or cultural practices but also for decorative art. (Singh, 2004)As the stains are temporary, there is need developed for making henna art stay longer and the body and also that it retains its dark color for a longer amount of time. Henna is used on skin and also on hair for natural coloring purposes. (Falletta, 2014) The basis of the current experiment is henna usage and how it can be influenced by factors so that it stays longer and with a darker color. (RADHAKRISHNAN, 2014)This experiment will help derive a definitive ingredient which helps with the duration and color of henna. It is particularly useful as many people are currently shifting from artificial coloring methods which damage the hair and going to natural options such as henna.

RELEVANT IDEAS

This experiment can also include an objective of making the henna stains last longer on skin.
An extensive experiment can be carried out with several brands of henna and determining which of them is the most effective.
HYPOTHESIS

If I use various factors to influence the color and duration of Henna, then I will be able to achieve the same with one of the factors.

My teacher were very supportive throughout the course of the experiment and my parents also encouraged me and provided support by supplying the apparatus of the experiment. My classmates were willing to discover the results of my experiment and extended support.
EXPERIMENTAL METHODOLOGY

STEPS

Prepare henna paste from henna powder. Take some hair samples of a lighter hair color and divide them in six samples for testing different materials. On one sample apply henna mixed with coffee and one with lemon powder and apply the varied samples of henna to the different samples and record the results. Label all the samples properly so that there is no problem in differentiating them.

CONTROL GROUP

There was no requirement for a control group in the experiment as there was no risk involved and analyzing the finding could easily be done by one person.

DATA COLLECTION

The data derived from the experiment is quite descriptive in nature. Personal research notes will be helpful for the initial data entry and for the final report a tabular data in either Microsoft Word or Excel will do.
POSSIBLE OUTCOMES

1) There will be no change in the duration or the color of the hair.
2) The color of the hair will change to a different shade than the expected one.
3) The color will darken and will stay for a longer duration.

DATA ANALYSIS

The use of coffee did not make an impact on the color of the hair samples and neither did lemon distinctly, but a mixture of both lemon and coffee provided a better shade of color. Time was a significant factor and the resulting effects were evidently better.
CONCLUSION

Coffee and lemon did not significantly impact the color of the resultant mixture but a mixture of both the elements provided with better results. But the most important factor which influenced the results was the amount of time henna was applied to the samples. The most effective mixture was the one which was kept for 5 hours and mixed with both coffee and lemon.
REFLECTION

The strength of the experiment is that some of the materials were readily available from home the observations could be made conveniently.
During the phase of henna application, there were different kind of samples to be made and kept for a series of hours and washed which took 4-5 hours of time.
The experiment could have been carried out with better tools for applying the henna for better results and making a quality mixture.
