Report 1
What does Dry docks World-Dubai do to help protect the environment?

DryDocks World Dubai is one of the largest shipyards in the world being the largest one in the Middle-East which handles over 350 vessels a year. Considering the magnitude, it has to take care about environmental issues also. DryDocks World has started to build an LNG powered tug boat as a part of the “Green Economy for Sustainable Development” initiative after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Maritime Green Initiative. The project will be in operation by 2015. (Staff, 2014) DryDocks World also initiated the process of cleaning the ships with Robotic Cleaning technology which makes use of ultra high pressure water instead of chemicals to preserve environment and enhance productivity. (The Envirobot removes coatings from vessels by applying ultra high pressure water to the surface, n.d.)
How does the company attempt to minimize its carbon footprint?

The LNG fuelled tug project offers a lot of benefits other than low cost and higher productivity which is that it cuts NOx and CO2 emissions by nearly 85% and 25% accordingly. Dubai Carbon Centre of excellence will advise DryDocks for developing low-carbon strategies for the consideration of the portfolio for Certified Emission Reductions (CER). The amount on the reduction in carbon dioxide emission is 25% which substantial.(Drydocks World and Dubai Maritime City plan UAE’s first LNG-fueled tug, 2014)

What ethical issues are involved here?

When it comes to environment preservation in a huge multinational company, ethics are not to be sacrificed for higher profits. Ethics can include not destroying the environment, transparency in finances, customer relations, and much more. DryDocks World Dubai state in their corporate philosophies that they believe in success which is achieved through best ethical practices. (Seperi, 2009) There could be a possibility of a breaking of environmental ethics as DryDocks consumes a lot of fuel which adds to pollution and the usage of chemicals for cleaning the ship which directly go into the water. There would have been a breach of these ethics if DryDocks stuck to the cleaning process by using chemicals but they upgraded to robotic cleaning technology which is costlier than the other alternative but they chose environmental preservation over higher profits.

Is sustainability a consideration? Should it be?

Sustainability of environment should be a concern for every company operating in the premises close to nature. In the case of DryDocks World, their operations run near to large water bodies with aquatic life which are to be preserved. Even the quality of water is to be sustained. Even the question of sustaining the harbor comes in to picture as it is a crucial task. The docks are supposed to be equipped with a system for collection and treatment of used water as it might contain toxic materials, paint and oil. Also, in case of rains the first downpour leads the polluted water right into the decanting basin and it has to be taken care of. (Rogeon, 2012)

What is corporate social responsibility? How far do you think it should be applied?

Corporate social responsibility of a firm is to go beyond the profit making corporate responsibilities and serve society’s causes like social welfare, alternative energy or environment sustainability programs for the community. (Corporate Social Responsibilty, n.d.) Dubai Health Authority recently organized a blood donation campaign which was an initiative fulfilling company’s corporate social responsibility. (Drydocks World and Maritime World organises Blood Donation campaign, 2014) Dubai DryDocks hosted Program Staff Recruitment Indonesia as a part of their corporate social responsibility. Corporate Social Responsibilities should be a focus as the company has already developed so much and giving back to the society should be a concern for sustainable development and goodwill.

Describe the patterns in the ethical topic for this project.

The pattern for this project has been pretty much straightforward consistently following a similar tone about companies that should adhere to their ethics regarding their corporate social responsibility. We have also noticed a concerning tone about what are the after-effects of a company’s actions if they do not follow the ethics and this action should be regulated. Moreover we can see a motivational tone about the subject of the benefits of following ethics that it retains customer satisfaction and goodwill.

Report -2

What kind of Recycling is done by DryDocks World Dubai?

The Environmental management system at DryDocks Dubai constantly tries to reduce the environmental impact and recycles wherever possible. DryDocks World does this through handling of ballast water, environment friendly antifouling, proper management of sewage and garbage and safe use of refrigerants. DryDocks Dubai was successful in recycling 85% of the waste generated in 2013, as compared to 79% in the previous year which has earned the dock the title of the most environmentally responsible shipyard. (Staff, Drydocks World scores high for customer satisfaction, 2013)
What recycling requirements are in place?

Recycling requirements like cleaning water bodies for re-use, waste disposal management for recycling waste, environment friendly antifouling is done so that resources can be re-used again. DryDocks World started to clean the vessels using water at a high pressure rather than using chemicals and it is an effort to keep the environment clean but it also uses a lot of water in the process which needs to be recycled through proper methods. (The Envirobot removes coatings from vessels by applying ultra high pressure water to the surface, n.d.)
What ethical issues are raised when considering recycling?

Disregarding conservation and recycling of matter due to attempts of cost reduction can result in an ethical issue of not considering environmental resources. In some situations, recycling actually provides the opportunity of less expenditure. Recycling paper is important wherever possible as lesser trees will get cut down in the process. (Political/Ethical Importance of Recycling, n.d.)
What kind of factors drives these changes?

The factors affecting recycling at a grave level can be fatality towards animals, wastage of non-renewable resources, and increase in cost due to more expenditure on raw material which can be recycled. The motivating factors towards recycling include cost reduction regarding raw materials, less harm to environment and customer satisfaction. Recycling also benefits companies in matters like packaging, batteries, vehicles, electronic equipment, etc. (Save money by reducing, reusing and recycling waste, n.d.)
What is corporate social responsibility? How far do you think it should be applied?

Corporate Social Responsibility is termed as a set of voluntary activities done by a company to work in a social, economic and environmentally sustainable manner. Corporate social responsibilities include humane activities done by companies to support the community and serve society’s purposes of helping the community and also include activities that sustain the environment. (Corporate Social Responsibilty, n.d.) It has a bigger meaning than it suggests and goes far beyond just the words. It is a civic responsibility by the company as an individual. Specifically about sustaining the environment a company can manage stationeries well to avoid wastage and pollution. Papers should be properly recycled and batteries should be recharged rather than disposing them off every time which creates toxic waste.

Describe the changes in the local environment that relates to the subject.

The act of recycling affects local environment the most as it decreases garbage and wastage, reduces resource consumption in a region and the waste management keeps the area clean. Constant recycling will benefit the company and the people in the region. Recycling locally benefits people by providing jobs and helps business expansion. Sorting and processing recyclables provides more employment opportunities than incineration and landfill of waste.
