What does UTS Carrier do to help protect the environment?
UTS Carrier is a joint venture Company between United Technical Services and Carrier Corporation. It claims about its belief that Safety comes first and their Environmental Health and Safety policy suggests that they have strict codes regarding the protection of personal safety and environment. They are committed in the supply of safe products by including environmental plans as a critical part of their business plans. UTS also uses recycled waste water after waste water treatment. The use of energy efficient equipment is encouraged to reduce consumption. (Service Business Unit, n.d.)
How does UTS Carrier attempt to minimize its carbon footprint?
UTS Carrier manufactures air conditions and refrigerators which emit ultra low carbon dioxide which causes global warming as they consume lesser resources and emit fewer emissions. In fact, they were the first company to introduce non-ozone-depleting refrigerators when it became know that CFCs deplete the ozone layer. The aquasmart system in their water coolers also prevents CFC emissions. (UTS Carrier Catalogue 2012, n.d.)
What ethical issues are involved here?
Being a company manufacturing air-conditioners, refrigerators and air coolers all of which potentially emit CFCs which deplete the ozone layer, they are bound to have ethical issues regarding environmental sustainability. But in this case, they made sure that their technology gets updated so that CFC emissions from their products stop. A company like this can choose to not pay heed to the problems regarding CFC and keep using the same technology to reduce costs for new technology which can create an ethical issue.
Is sustainability a consideration? Should it be?
Environmental sustainability is the prime consideration here as the emissions from coolants directly affect the environment by damaging the ozone layer which results in higher rate of ultra violet rays reaching earth. UTS Carrier as a company considers sustainability as an important aim for the future and acts accordingly. (Environment Health and Safety, n.d.) It is included in their goals that improving their environmental performance and prevention of pollution are one of their primary aims. Sustainablity of environment can be achieved to a certain extent if resources are managed well and recycling is encouraged and implemented.
What is corporate social responsibility? How far do you think it should be applied?
Corporate Social Responsibility has been defined as an optional but morally advised activity that every organization should perform in order to fulfill social goals as a service to the community. It can be applied in many ways like holding blood donation drives or reducing emissions. Reducing damage to the environment is a part of corporate social responsibility as it is a service to society that the company is putting efforts in reducing pollution. UTS Carrier can develop a technology that required less water or re-uses water efficiently to avoid wastage, promote re-cycling and reduce costs. (What is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainable Business?, n.d.)
Describe changes in the global environment that relate to the topic for this project and explain the connection.
UTS Carriers are working in a field where global environment is a bigger concern than any. Since some years, global warming has been a constant threat to civilization which is largely caused by pollution and CFC emissions. These CFC emissions generally emitting from coolant products which UTS Carriers produces in abundance. But due to its environment sustaining clauses in its policy they have managed to produce coolant products not emitting CFCS. Currently, the industry uses HFC instead of CFC.
