Report on Evolution of Transportation Infrastructure in UAE

EVOLUTION OF TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE IN UAE
The recent years have brought a torrent of development opportunities as well as newer additions to modern transport infrastructure in UAE. The evolution of such infrastructure has been witnessed at multiple levels. All the areas of transportation including road transport, metro transport, ferry services, and the airline industry have upgraded over time providing advanced and convenient transport services to people. Several factors like economic development, overall development of infrastructure, and the future goals aligned to the Vision 2020. Dubai has been the center for growth of infrastructural facilities on a worldwide stage. Evolution of the transport systems is an ever-present sign of a developing county. The evolution of the transport infrastructure can be observed through individual transport systems. (UAE Government, 2015)
The bus transport systems of UAE provide comfortable seating and many modern essential amenities also providing special seats for the disabled people. Buses also accept payment for tickets through cards and cash. Certain buses also provide Wi-Fi facilities to passengers due to their increasing needs. Air-conditioned buses are also available in both cities of Dubai ad Abu Dhabi.
The infrastructure of the bus system developed further with the introduction of the world’s first zero-emission electric bus. This new addition to the bus system was brought forward by the Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC). This implementation of modern technology was due to the adherence of TDIC to global sustainability standards. These types of buses were introduced in the year 2010. These buses run completely run on electricity. They have been introduced to circulate in the Sir Bani Yas Island but there have been plans about introducing this system at a larger level. (Clean Middle East, 2015)
This is a 30 million USD venture which has been established in a 100,000 square feet plant. This project has been initiated as a joint venture with Designline Corporation. This bus consumes no fossil fuels and exerts zero emissions. There have been plans to hold official talks and establish contracts with the Roads and transport authority (RTA) and the Department of Transport (DOT) repetively from Dubai and Abu Dhabi in order to shape the future of bus transport infrastructure of UAE with these non-polluting local bus service in the UAE. UAE has been trying to focus more on sustainable energy sources and the introduction of such facilities takes UAE on step closer to achieving fuel independency. (Streamline arketing Group, 2015)
The Metro system of UAE is an integral part of its transport system and an epitome of its transport infrastructure capabilities. It was inaugurated in September 2009 along with becoming the first metro system in the Arab Gulf States. The introduction of Metro Services was a critical step due to the increasing population and the amount of outsiders moving to UAE due to the growing business opportunities. The project of Metro system was under taken by Dubai Rail Link which is a union of four companies including Mitsubishi. (Railway Technology.com, 2015)
The Metro became integrated with the Roads and Transport Authority and became a critical limb of the transport system of UAE in the year 2005. With the ongoing system with two running lines, other additional lines are a work in progress. The plan in progress for the Dubai Metro system is to have a circulation of 320 kilometers active by the year 2020 as a part of the Vision 2020. This will make the Dubai Metro system the world’s longest driverless metro system. This depicts the vast potential of UAE’s infrastructural development capabilities. (Railway Technology.com, 2015)
The metro system presently includes two lines named the red line and the green line. The red line covers a distance of 52 kilometers and passes through a total of 29 stations of which 4 are underground stations. The red line has a circulation of 32,000 passengers every hour. The green line of the Dubai metro covers a distance of 23 meters sharing two stations with the red line. There are future plans of establishing more efforts and ideas on the metro system with the extension of the existent red and green lines. (Badam, 2013)
The architecture instilled on the metro system shows the infrastructural capabilities of UAE. The tracks have been designed in such a way that they do not cross the highway which ensures full mode segregation. The underground stations do not impact other buildings and include platform screen doors. This metro system also has the facility of air conditioning along with the safety measures. Taxi services are also the carried out near every station. The next addition to the metro system are the blue and the yellow lines.
The ferry service is also an essential cog of the transport network of UAE. The ferry service has its circulation amongst 3 terminals which are Al Mamzar, Dubai Marina and Al Ghubaiba. It was introduced in the year 2011. The recent plans include the addition of two new stations which include Festival city and Al Jaddaf. (Halligan, 2014)
The expansion plans are both aimed to increase convenience for marine passenger transport and as a tourist attraction as a unique viewpoint to witness Dubai City. There is a monthly circulation of 7,900 passengers through the ferry. The expansion required in the ferry service can be done conveniently due to the quality and accessibility of infrastructure available. (Badam, 2014)
Collectively UAE has been developing on all fronts but the development of transport capabilities through the infrastructure are both necessary and a notable development aspect in UAE. The development of Infrastructure in the transport department are beneficial for both the residents are appealing and convenient for the tourists.

Introduction

Expo 2020 is worldwide business exposition which is going to be held in Dubai. To be able to hold such an expo of huge magnitude, a country needs to win a bid to be able to given the right to hold this expo. Generally, this type of expos attracts millions of people. This kind of an expo had never been hosted anywhere in the Middle East and Africa. Each expo has to pass through the rules and regulations provided by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE). (Official Site of the Bureau International des Expositions, n.d.)Millions of visitors from around the world are expected to attend this exposition. The winning theme of Expo 2020 is “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future” and the topics will focus on sustainability, mobility and opportunity. The bid was approved on 27th November this year. A set of business ethics will enforce and instill core values on the premise of this huge event. (EXPO 2020, n.d.)

The Business Ethics regarding Expo 2020 will consider of these elements:
Analyzing and maintaining safety measures
The safety of the guests and the operating staff, even the people serving the event, all are important and their safety is a prime concern, the safety of the people and the premises both are necessary. Safety measures include clean premises and resources used in the expo. The safety of people is also dependant on their health. Providing emergency services is a must because of the magnitude of the amount of people arriving at the event require the in-charge teams to put forward good safety measures and first aid care with emergency services around the venue of the expo. Rigorously keeping the premises is a must as the huge amount of people might cause chaos over a small problem as such. Other safety measures can include provisions for fire safety in the premises.

Providing abundant mobility in and around the expo
Providing complete transportation means in and around the expo is important. People arriving from other countries require smooth transportation means to reach the expo. There is also this issue of mobility inside the expo. It can be predicted that there will be a lot people visiting the huge area of the expo. So it is a priority for the people in charge to find an optimum method of transport inside the expo. This means keeping shortcuts, arranging the stalls or lecture halls. Providing proper transport to the venue and its people is necessary and not an easy task.

Sustainability
As the most a primary elements of the ideal set of people built for making submission to the cause of this expo goes beyond just displaying zest towards the event. The overall tone of the subject matter in the topic of sustainability will focus on finding oil and water. In today’s ever growing world where can see improvement and understanding in every aspect of our lives. Sustainability of mankind and nature has been a prime concern for us which has to be focused on during its run in 2020. (Sustainability, n.d.)To promote efforts toward sustainability the more powerful nations have started taking some steps so the world can follow. The road towards sustainability is slow but constant treading will make a difference for us all.

Sensitization
The heads of the executive departments of Expo 2020 should be role models for moral conduct and must ensure that business decisions are appropriate both in terms of legal and on ethical grounds. They are committed to creating and maintaining a work environment where it is clear all that is required to behave in accordance with the rules and ethical principles of this code.
Expo Live
The previous exhibitions in the past have brought newer concepts to our knowledge. New ideas and thoughts have changed our world forever, leading to change in our perspective. The previous exhibitions have brought upon views that have challenged nations, industries and new nations to create and explore. Inspired by that passion, expo live will be a solution to world’s biggest challenges and will help in overcoming them. It is a structured and well-orchestrated innovation and partnership program. It introduces measurable milestones and newer ways to measure the effect and the inventive capabilities of the expo. For the first time, the presentation will be on the site but with innovative dynamic platforms. (Expo Live, n.d.)

Here are some general activities which aren’t allowed at the Expo 2020:
• Any kind of improper and malicious conduct.

• Any kind of violent and dangerous behavior.

• Having drugs or illegal substance of any kind.
• Talking very loudly or using lewd gestures as it interrupts with the patrons’ recreational activities.
• Spreading waste and spitting in the premises.
• Roaming around the expo without proper clothes and without footwear.
• Interference of any manner with the activities of expo or their patrons and exhibitors.

• Activities which damages other people or property.
• Possession of any article defined as a weapon.
• Having any kind of fire-arms in person.
• And lastly there is a specification of a non-negotiable agreement to screening and checking by expo which is done for checking if a person has illegal items in their possession and everybody has to go through it..
These regulations are made for providing a safe environment for the people and for compliance with terms. These terms are supposed to be followed by employees as well as guests.

Avoiding Pollution
Steps will be taken to make sure pollution is avoided at all costs. The use of recyclable materials will be encouraged. Even the fuel used for day-to-day should not be the ones that create pollution or encourage global warming. To ensure this, the site where the expo is held houses so many solar panels that it generates 50% of the city’s electricity. This would encourage people in using non conventional but environmentally friendly sources of energy.
For the attendees:

• The attendees are advised to be considerate and attentive. They are also advised to avoid using vulgar, derogatory and avoid using derogatory and hateful language.
• They are advised to be aware of the premises and to warn the authorities present if they sense a harmful situation.

In particular, as part of the tools that regulate participation in the Event, the Special Regulations – in addition to highlighting the legislative environmental obligations of Participants and of their respective suppliers – envisage the acceptance of a series of environmental commitments, including:

• The adoption of measures for the prevention of pollution and proper management of the environmental impacts associated to construction and setting up their pavilions and exhibition structures;
• The reduction and optimization of energy and water consumption;
• The adoption of specific strategies to manage the environmental aspects connected to packaging, logistics, transport and movement of goods;
• The preference for products and services with the best environmental characteristics and performance in the development of their commercial and marketing activities.

Goals and Strategies

Building materials, components, and systems found locally or regionally saving energy and resources in transportation to the Exhibition Site
Using construction tools, consumables and locally available frameworks which helps reducing energy usage and the translocation is reduced.
• obtained from garbage or from the places nobody uses.
Also the materials salvaged from garbage or obtained from a damaged state which is refurbished and their look and feel improves in the process. Using heavily recycled content decreases the need for new raw materials and this reduces pollution and wastage in the process and the need for incineration is eliminated.
• Materials which can be recycled
Select materials that can be easily dismantled and reused or recycled. Recycled or recyclable product packaging: Products enclosed in recycled content or recyclable packaging.
Choose the raw materials which allow easy dismantling and which can be used and utilized again and again. The consumables can be packed using the recycled materials
• Long Lasting
Objects that are highly resistant and durable in comparison to normal materials. Durable products should be promoted.
• Innocuous materials
The materials that do not cause cancer or emit radiation or cause irritation can be shown by the company after proper analysis.
• Materials that cause the minimum emissions
Products that have minimal emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) should be promoted. Products that also maximize resource and energy efficiency while reducing chemical emissions.
Materials that emit the least Volatile Organic Compounds should be encouraged which increase efficiency regarding energy levels (Sala, 2015)
